@OP: Can be done, but you need a REALLY competent installer who is familiar with the BMW anti-theft system (EWS). If the installer screws it up, you could be left with a car that won't start at all. Sounds like Chad44 knows what he's talking about.

    Shop around, get references, etc.

I have had a bad expirence with viper alarms..I have viper 5103 remote start installed in my 02' Jetta..yes you will need a spare key and a modedule, but the problem that could happen, which happenes to me. Is that once i turn the car on with my remote start after 6-8 mins the car tries to start again while already being on, so it rubs your start..if you do end up getting install make sure you don't have the same problem with yours otherwise you will be replacing starts left and right. I believe this problem is because of the module that bypasses the security system that car has which prevents you from trying to start your car again once is already on...but again i live in WA where its snows and is cold as heck, and when you have leather seats its nice to have your car warm before you get in it..so i guess you just got to weight your options..IMO

This is also an installation problem, not a component problem. There is a right way to wire the remote start and a fast way that most installers use. There is a wire that gets wired to a tachometer wire or injector wire depending on what signal is available on the car. If the remote start is connected to this signal, it is then able to monitor the engine speed and know if the engine is running or not. This feature is on every main brand remote start- so just as a note for people that are getting them installed, ask them to hook up the remote start to "Tach" instead of timed start.

I've been a fan of remote starts ever since I had one put into my wife's Avalon. As Martin said, it's great getting into a warm or semi-warm car in the dead of winter. With the auto-temp feature, though, it's even better when the car's been sitting in the hot Florida sun -- fire that sucker up, and the A/C is doing its job cooling the car off by the time you get into it.

So when I bought my black/black/black CPO'd 2006 325Cic in Florida, I asked about the possibility of installing a remote start. The dealer (Bert Smith, in St. Pete; you probably know 'em, Nathan) said they wouldn't touch that and recommended against it. Made me sad, but ... . Passing this along just to add to your information base.

Yeah i got mine install at Best Buy when I use to work for them...they suck at installing stuff on your car so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! DON'T GO TO BEST BUY TO GET ANYTHING INSTALL ON A BMW!!!...I was too trusty to let them work on my jetta, but not going to fall for it on my BMW...their installers barely know what they are doing..most of them have learned what they know from messing people cars up..just IMO..not hating just saying..if you car about your BMW don't go to Best Buy..

Question Viper remote start or similar for 335xi

I just asked a BMW dealer in Chicago area about remote starts. He said they work but as the key uses rolling codes eventually the key in the special harness may fail and then the car will not start, requiring a tow.
Anyone have knowledge on that issue?

I have had a remote start on a 330xi for over 4 years and no issues.

BMW E36 Keyless Go Entry, Remote, Start Stop, Alarm, Keyless Go Montaj
Yup, I'm going to take the plunge. I've always been very anti-remote start...Thinking it had no purpose to serve when I was back home in Cali, plus the fact that when running remote start you only really warm up the engine oil and not the entirety of the fluids in other components of the car. Yes I've read the user manuals of each car and BMW does not want us to use these things whatsoever. I get it because of anti-idling laws in Europe...So what's the use? To look cool? Ugh...

So why now? Well apparently...over here in IA, you can get a ticket if you got snow floating off of a running car. Plus, it seriously would be really nice if the windows were defrosted and lastly a warm seat to get in before driving 35 miles to work.

At the moment, I already got the diagrams to do proper bypassing for the E46 M3. The following items I'll be using are:

Viper 5904 Security with Remote Start:

Viper SmartStart (iPhone integration):

Viper 556UW Universal Transponder Anti-Theft Bypass

Can't wait for those items to come in and I'll publish a DIY as I get them and will update this thread.

Now for the E70, I still haven't found any good info about actual installation for it. I've seen a bunch of people using an assortment of goods and also have posted youtube vids. No DIYs...I might have to ask some help with this and will takes notes to share with everyone. For the time being, I know these are the things I'll be needing for the install:

Viper 4704 Remote Start:

Viper SmartStart (iPhone integration):

Xpresskit KIBMW Key Interface Module:

Xpresskit DLPK Doorlock Module:

Thanks for looking guys! I'll post up updates as stuff progress!

This forum needs some love too!

Has anyone installed or considered installing an Alarm/Remote Start on their ZHP? My friend asked me to install one on their '08 Focus, so I decided to check if anyone had installed one on an E46. Apparently, not too many people have done it.

There is one DIY thread, doesn't seem too difficult: https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=944672

I was just thinking about this today! That write-up doesn't look that straight-forward, though, it looks like it took an experienced EE 3 days to do it and the remote looks stupid. If you do get it set up you should do a write-up, the more the better

Picked up a Compustar Max It system with my eBay bucks.
Install goals:
Retain OEM siren and chirp sound
Retain all functions of the OEM key fob using the aftermarket fob
Add additional theft deterrents (fuel, starter and spark cut, piezo buzzers, etc)
Install stealthy as possible, or at least extremely difficult to get to.
Maximize capability of the brain (i.e. use as many outputs and functions as I find necessary or cool)

I'll keep this thread updated.
