Polaris shocks

Polaris shocks DEFAULT

The quickest way to simultaneously improve a Polaris Slingshot's performance, comfort and handling is to upgrade from factory shocks. This can help in a myriad of ways, giving drivers a host of exciting new options to tailor the feel of their Slingshot to their own personal specifications. Shocks serve an integral role in the Slingshot's suspension system. This is usually done through a combination of a heavy duty spring support in conjunction with an internal hydraulic valve system that absorbs kinetic energy and dissipates it as heat. When a Slingshot wheel dips down into a pit or rolls over a bump in the road, the force from that rapid change is absorbed by the shocks. Specifically, the springs store and release the bulk of this energy, bracing the wheel against the rest of the Slingshot's suspension. The remainder of this energy, including vibrations, causes the hydraulic fluid inside the piston to shift, the method by which this occurs depends on which type of piston is inside the shock. The common result is that this motion converts the kinetic energy into heat within the hydraulic fluid, which is then dissipated into the atmosphere.  Overall this leads to a much smoother ride with more control resting in the drivers hands. Further advantages of upgraded shocks are the allowance of height or damping adjustments to change the Polaris Slingshot' center of gravity or how much give the hydraulic piston allows. This helps drivers to customize their ride for either a leisurely cruise on an open road, a fast race around tight corners on a track or an enthusiastic ride over otherwise bumpy roads.

More Velocity Shocks from Polaris?

With the wide acceptance of the new Pro-CC rear suspension on the Indy XC models, we also find the Velocity shocks now on the new RMK Khaos and Indy XCR models for 2020. This makes us believe that Polaris will be coming with even more models, at least during Snow Check, that can be ordered with Velocity Series shocks.

What makes them so special? First found on the Polaris race sleds, they relocate the piggyback reservoir to a lower position on the shock body. This creates more of a zonal damping profile, in that for the first part of shock compression some of the fluid is bleeding off into the reservoir. Once the IFP passes the position of the reservoir mid-stroke, the shock damping becomes much firmer. This in effect gives us a position sensitive damping curve – initially softer, then firmer. But, here’s the twist – the high pressure gas charge is in on the other side of the internal floating piston, so now that pressure pushes on the compression valving making it hard to overcome and able to better resist the big hits. Kind of the best of both worlds.

For this reason, we look forward to the 2021 model line with anticipation. In fact, we’re not going to wait as we have been working towards using the popular Velocity Series shock absorbers on our Switchback Assault sleds to broaden their suspension compliance. We have already obtained a complete set of four Velocity Series XCR shocks to be installed onto a Switchback Assault. This set of four should soon be available directly from Polaris as an accessory package, so owners of previous model year Switchback Assault sleds can make the upgrade.

Velocity shocks

For owners of these sleds just looking to improve the ride comfort of the rear suspension, there have already been riders who have installed the rear shock from the Indy XC onto their Switchback Assault and experienced impressive gains in ride compliance. This is not only from the shock valving itself, but from the bypass design of the Velocity Series that allows for the softer initial damping with great bottoming to resistance at the end of the stroke.

This means we have two options for the Switchback Assault – going with the XCR calibration Velocity Series (all four) or going with the more compliant INDY XC calibration Velocity Series (rear track shock). We’re going to try both of them!

DOUBLE ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS FOR THE POLARIS SLINGSHOT

Description

Drastically improve the feel of your ride with this aftermarket shock upgrade from Twist Dynamics.  The Twist Dynamics Double & Triple Adjustable Shocks undergo a three-step sealing system for leak-proof performance. Each shock is serialized and individually dyno tested to meet a specific performance curve validation before packaging. Constructed with deflective disc valving on a precision machined aluminum piston with a low-stiction PTFE piston band for quick response and long wear. Body machined from high-strength billet aluminum. 5/8″ center-less ground hard chrome plated piston rod. 18 clicks of simultaneous compression/ rebound adjustment on double adjustable shocks, independent compression and rebound adjustment on triple adjustable shocks. Up to 2″ of ride adjustment with the coil-over spring system. Springs are made in the U.S. using high tensile, chrome silicon steel for high travel. High tensile steel required fewer coils for a lighter weight spring. Heat treated and shot-peened for long life. 2 % free height lifetime guarantee.

Color Matched Springs are available for an additional cost*
