Recent cars all come with an impressive amount of technology, however, by reason of your budget or the year of your Ford Focus, you may not be fortunate enough to have them all. In this article we’re gonna help you correct this situation by explaining how to install parking sensor on my Ford Focus? In reality, this option is highly profitable, especially if you live in the city and have to park habitually in narrow parking spaces. To help you out, we’ll first look at how parking sensors work, then we’ll check out how to install a parking reverse sensor on a Ford Focus, and finally, how much does a parking sensor cost?

How does parking sensors operate on an Ford Focus?

So we commence with the functioning of a parking sensor. As we explained to you in the intro, this particularl interesting option permits you to know the distance between the back of your Ford Focus and an obstacle when you maneuver. It is therefore mainly good for drivers who have to maneuver frequently, whose visibility is bad, or whose car size is large.
Frequently fitted as standard, the reverse sensors of a Ford Focus incorporate a kit of sensors (minimum 4) that will be activated with reverse gear and will sense obstacles in the vicinity. The technology used is ultrasounds, which will send a signal that will bounce off the obstacle and be sent back to the sensor. A computer will examine the duration of this journey and calculate the distance between the obstacle and the radar. In most cases you will have a sound indicator in the cabin which will enhance in level with the closeness of the obstacle and sometimes a visual marker in complement. The reversing radars of a Ford Focus will help you for parking, but also for safety and avoiding pedestrians.

How to install parking sensors on a Ford Focus?

We now advance to the section that you are quite likely most excited about, installing reverse parking sensors on a Ford Focus. This part is for you if you don’t have a standard reserve sensor set up and you still wish to benefit of this technology, or if you have to replace a broken one. You are lucky, it is possible to buy aftermarket parking sensors to install yourself on your Ford Focus.

How to replace a broken backup sensors on a Ford Focus

First we’ll see how to replace a broken parking sensor on an Ford Focus. In cases where your Ford Focus has suffered a rear shock and one of the sensors of your reversing radar has been broken, it will have to be replaced to allow the system to function properly. Luckily for you this process is very simple, you can even make it out yourself without any particular mechanical skill:

  • Get a replacement unit radar of the manufacturer’s brand name.
  • Disconnect the old backup sensor from the back of the bumper.
  • Remove the broken parking sensor from your Ford Focus, this step is extremely intuitive, it is only clipped on.
  • Remount the new sensor and connect it.
  • All you’ll have to do is test it to make sure it’s operating properly.
  • How to install an aftermarket parking sensor kit on an Ford Focus

Now we advance to the part you’re quite likely most excited about, how to install a reverse sensor set up on a Ford Focus that doesn’t have one? As we said early on, you’re lucky because many of OEMs now deal aftermarket backup radar models. But, the best performing and least fragile models will be models that fit into your bumper. We will look at these models in this part. It is imperative to have some notions in electricity, and some notions in do-it-yourself to contemplate the fitting up of the kit. You will definitely have to remove the bumper of your Ford Focus for the installation, do not hesitate to read our article on this subject matter to learn the procedure to follow. If you don’t feel like it, you can call a professional, the task should take him between 1 and 2 hours, and for you around 3 hours.

    • You will simply need to follow the installation guidance, but we summarize here the main basic steps.
    • Remove the bumper if you don’t have access to the inside of it.
    • Reflect on the ideal position of the sensors to avoid blind spots, using the supplied drill bell, drill your bumper.
    • Position your various sensors.
    • Route the cables to the headlamp unit that contains your reverse light.
    • Get the current from the wires to connect your parking sensors to this one.
    • Try it out all out.
    • Install a parking sensor without drilling on a Ford Focus

And finally, we will now present you the installation of a drill-free parking sensors system on a Ford Focus. There are two kind, the ultrasounds more vulnerable because subjected to the shocks, and the electromagnetics which stick at the rear of the bumper and which are thus protected, it does not harm your bumper and will thus be easy to take out. This kind of radar sticks on the bumper. The installation of these types of sensors will be similar.

      • Adhere to the installation owners manual which is accessible with some electrical bases.
      • Identify the ideal sensor location, either behind the bumper for the electromagnetic reversing sensor(adhesive tape) and or the different locations of the ultrasonic sensors.
      • Glue them together and connect them using the box provided.
      • Try it all out.
      • What’s the price of parking sensors for a Ford Focus?

Price of swapping a broken reversing parking sensor for an Ford Focus

The replacement of a broken reversing radar will rely upon the model, but the price will vary between 10 and 30 euros per sensor. It is required to count around one hundred euros for the installation of the kit by a professional.

Price of an ultrasonic parking sensors with drilling for Ford Focus

For the models with holes there are many kits and different brands but you will have to count about 50 euros for a high class system.

How to Install a Ford Focus O2 Sensor

O2, or oxygen, sensors on a Ford Focus monitor the mix of oxygen ratio to burned fuel in the exhaust system. They transmit this data to the powertrain control module, or PCM, which then adjusts the amount of fuel to comply with the data. After time, the O2 sensor in the Focus can break down and trip the "check engine" light on the dashboard. Replacing the sensor yourself can save you money on labor charges, and the auto parts stores can read the trouble code and determine which sensor in the exhaust system of the Ford Focus has gone bad.

How to Install a Ford Focus O2 Sensor

Step 1

Drive the Ford Focus up onto the car ramps on a flat surface and apply the parking brake.

Step 2

Place a wheel chock behind one of the rear tires.

Step 3

Put on the safety glasses, collect all the tools and new O2 sensor, and crawl under the front of the Focus.

Step 4

Locate the O2 sensor you're replacing by following the exhaust system to the sensor the parts store told you was bad. The sensor screws into portholes in the exhaust pipes forward of the catalytic converter. There is one near the manifold in the front pipe area and another one near the catalytic converter.

Step 5

Follow the wire of the O2 sensor to the plug and unplug it. Use the flathead screwdriver to press in the clip lock and separate the plug.

Step 6

Place the oxygen sensor socket onto the ratchet and remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. If it is stubbornly rusted or stuck, light the propane torch and heat the area of pipe around the O2 sensor to expand the pipe. Remove the O2 sensor once the pipe expands enough to release it, but then allow ample time for the pipe to cool down.

Step 7

Screw the new O2 sensor into the porthole in the exhaust pipe and tighten with the ratchet and socket. Be careful not to over-tighten. Plug the wire back into the connector, collect the tools and crawl out from underneath the Focus.

Remove the wheel chock, release the parking brake, and drive the Focus down off of the car ramps.

Tips

  • You can unplug the negative battery terminal for five minutes or so to reset the computer in the Ford Focus. Be aware that underlying problems can be taking place in the operation of the Focus that could be causing the O2 sensor to fail and by simply replacing the sensor, you may just be temporarily solving the problem and inevitably damage the new sensor as well. An internal antifreeze leak, oil consumption, or a rich fuel mixture can compromise and damage O2 sensors and if not dealt with, can and will damage replacement sensors. Make sure the parts store that scans your Focus has a qualified person to help you find out why the sensor failed to begin with.

  • Safety glasses
  • Replacement direct-fit oxygen sensor
  • Oxygen sensor socket (3/8 inch drive)
