Instructions are vague. Fill your tank with four inches of water, or at least enough to submerge the corner. Cut the corner of bag and submerge it underwater. This eliminates any floaters and bubbles in your sand. After that, use a plastic bag and pour your water on that to fill the rest of the tank. This eliminates any displacement. P

Perfect! Will always buy this brand

I’m downsizing my tank due to health issues, and I needed new sand for my new tank. I bought this sand thinking I’d be about a week before it settled enough to begin testing chemistry. The picture attached is literally 2 minutes from water adding. I mean it was crystal clear from the start!

black water

I don't understand how people were able to clean this so that it doesn't give the water this blackish look. I washed it like 10 times and put it into my tank. The next day when I got home the water looked very dirty. I ended up draining out all the water and dumped all these so called sand into the trash. what a waste of money and time.

Perfect Sand!

I really love this sand. I had white subtrate in my other tank and it did not look as pretty as this sand does. I also love that it is sand and not gravel because I have bought "sand" that was indeed tiny gravel. And unlike other sand, the water was pretty much clear after adding water.

Over priced!! Not sand!! Do not buy!!!

I wanted sand. Black sand. These are small pebbles. They had to be cleaned and the water that came threw was very dark. I contacted the seller about how they handle returns four days ago and have had zero response. Also u can get 20lb bag of BLACK SAND for the same price at pet co. This stuff is a rip off. And I'm stuck with it because return shipping would have been a nightmare. It looks decent in my tank. Just not what I wanted Read more

Not for Beginner planted aquariums

I am a new aquarium hobbyist and I take that into consideration and my review is meant to help others who are new avoid my mistakes.Overall, the product itself is good and if you do not want live plants this is a good substrate option. However if you DO want a planted aquarium there are some things to consider Do not use with a plants that need to root in the substrate. This sand (like most sand) becomes compact under water pressure and will not allow root structures to establish themselves Very difficult to clean properly as most gravel filters will not stop sand from traveling through the tube of your gravel cleaner. I had to reestablish the valve on my hose after it had sucked up too much sand and became clogged Read more

Way Overpriced

Bought the 5 pound black sand for $, realized I needed more so I decided to just go to my local Petsmart.Wow was I in for surprise. I found the same exact sand but the Topfin brand. A 5 lb bag of black sand, same colour and consistency, only $5! Go to Petsmart or Petco guys, so much cheaperrrrr. I feel so ripped off Read more

Looks Great

This is a nice size sand. It's not fine sand as the grains are a bit smaller than coffee grounds. The directions tell you to just put it in your tank and slowly pour the water in and then let it settle. Also not to scrub it, but it does need to be rinsed. There's lots of dust that needs to be rinsed out. There is also dye that comes out even though it's coated. I gently stirred it in a bucket but even as gentle as I was I saw some black had come off just a few pieces. You also need to be careful when you pour the water out as the lighter pieces will bind together on the top of the water and if you are rinsing inside they will easily go down the drain. To avoid all this it might actually help to put this in water for a few days before you start the cleaning part. It may be a little easier that way. Be advised that this will scratch glass or acrylic very easily and it sticks to things like your hands or the bucket when it's wet, so it can be a little messy.Once in the tank and settled, the water is crystal clear and it looks GREAT! The weight is good for holding plant roots down and once you spread it around the way you want it to look, it stays there. This does not have the fine little sparkles that some other substrates do but I am just so pleased with how it looks in my 3 gallon tank. Once I am done cycling the tank I think the plants, guppies and ghost shrimp will look wonderful! One 5 pound bag covered an area of inches L by inches W to a depth of one inch in the front sloping to 2 inches in the back with quite a bit still left. I would buy it again if I set up another tank! Best black sand ever.

So i got the sand, and tried to rinse it out, behold, no tint at all. The sand sunk right to the bottom (in the bucket). I used the bottle method to place it in the tank while wet, and it did not fog up my tank at all. The white spots are actually bubbles that havent risen to the top. This is the best black sand for aquarium use, much more affordable and good looking! Read more

perfect for my 25 gallon fish tank!

I was searching for sand that wasn't to light weight and the perfect solid black color for some time now. Most sand is really cheaply made and is a struggle for it to settle in the tank. This sand happened to be the perfect sand for me with no issues at all! just a precaution and note: always wash your sand before putting it in with your fish & when you put is in your tank let it sit for a couple hours(w/o your fish) while your filter is cycling. They sand does float to the top because of the air bubbles it traps but cleans up nicely after a little while.I have a 25 gallon tank and need 2 bags for my tank the photo shows only one bag I reordered another one:) Read more

Beautiful and functional addition

So glad I made the switch from gravel!!! I find my Oranda goldfish enjoy sifting and scavenging through this a lot more than through gravel, which would momentarily get stuck in their mouths and collect waste and food on the bottom. They are able to reach sinking pellets easier too. This sand looks sharp and is easy to clean with the Python.Note: this sand takes about a day to fully settle. Do not run filters until pieces stop floating because it will clog the propellers, especially hang on back (HOB) filters. Not the product's fault, but my otherwise excellent Aquaclear HOB occasionally stalls a year later because of sand bits that get in from the media (impossible to fully wash out of sponges, etc)x better than gravel for goldfish!
