How to get online with Genie HD DVR

Connecting your Genie HD DVR to the Internet gives you access to OnDemand content, Rewind features, and more. To connect your Genie HD DVR, you need the following: 
  • Wireless router or gateway connected to your home Internet service.
  • An Internet connection speed of at least 750Kbps. We recommend 2Mbps or higher. 
  • HD DVR Genie HR44, HR54, or Genie 2 model. To check your Genie model, press and hold INFO on your remote until the Info & Test screen appears on your TV. The receiver model number is next to Receiver. If you have earlier receiver models, follow these instructions.

Connect the Genie HD DVR using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Check to see if your router has WPS. Look for a button with the logo pictured here. If you don't see the logo, follow the next set of steps.

  1. Press MENU on your remote.
  2. Select Settings Network SetupConnect Now. If you're reconnecting to the Internet, select Reconnect Now.
  3. After the system checks the connection status, select Set Up Wireless.
  4. Select Push Button Setup.
  5. Push the WPS button (the one with the logo) on your router. The Genie detects the device. It may take a minute or two to verify the connection.

Once connected to your network, you’ll receive an Internet Setup Successful screen and can enjoy the benefits of being connected!

Connect the Genie HD DVR to Wi-Fi manually

  1. Press MENU on your remote.
  2. Select Settings > Internet SetupConnect Now. If you're reconnecting to the internet, select Reconnect Now.
  3. After the system checks the connection status, select Set Up Wireless.
  4. Select your wireless network.
  5. Enter your wireless network password and select Continue.

Once connected to your network, you’ll receive an Internet Setup Successful screen and can enjoy the benefits of being connected!

Connect a replacement Genie receiver

If you received a replacement non-Genie receiver, learn how to connect it. 

Exchange Genie receivers
  1. Place your new Genie next to your non-working Genie with both backs facing towards you.
  2. One by one, disconnect and remove each cable from the back of your old Genie. The only cord you don't need to transfer is the old power cord. 
  3. Connect the new power cord to the new Genie and an electrical outlet.
  4. Power on your replacement receiver and your TV.

Reset remote control
  1. On your remote, press and hold MUTE and SELECT.
  2. The green LED will blink twice.
  3. Press 9-8-7 on the remote. The green LED will blink four times.

Set up your Genie on your TV
  1. The Satellite Dish Setup screen displays on your TV.
  2. Keep the default settings as they are.
  3. Leave the Order ID field blank.
  4. Select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Activate your Genie and complete your setup
  1. Activate your Genie Mini online or call our automated activation line at 800.388.6597. You may need your access card number, receiver ID, and model number. They are on the barcode sticker on the outside of the box your replacement receiver came in.
  2. Complete your setup by following the guided screens to the end.
  3. If needed, a prompt to program your remote control appears. Follow the onscreen instructions or visit Program your DIRECTV remote control.
  4. Connect your receiver to the Internet by pressing MENU > Connect Now. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Return old equipment
Did you receive a return shipping label for your old receiver? Send it back within seven days to avoid non-return fees.

How do I reconnect my DIRECTV HD DVR to the Internet?



Step 1

Check that your Ethernet cable is connected to your Genie®/HD DVR and Internet router. When you’re ready, select Test Connection if prompted. Note: This may take a few moments, so give it some time.

If you’re having trouble reconnecting, select Back on the remote to try connecting with a wireless option.

Restart your router– unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in.

Contact your Internet service provider. If AT&T is your Internet service provider, you can quickly test your line or find out if there’s an outage here.

Push Button Setup/WPS allows you to reconnect your Genie® or HD DVR to your Wi-Fi network automatically. All you have to do is push the WPS button on your wireless router.

 

Step 1

Select Set Up Wireless.

Go to your wireless router and find the WPS button. It should look like this: WPS-icon-arrows

Press the WPS button and your receiver will automatically connect to the Internet.

Note: This may take a few moments, so give it some time.

If you’re having trouble connecting automatically, select Back on the remote to select your Wi-Fi network and enter your password.

Still can’t reconnect?

How to Connect DIRECTV Genie® to Wi-Fi

Watch this video to learn how to connect your Genie® HD DVR model HR44 to the Internet. Follow the simple steps for connecting your Genie.

 

 

Please note: If your HD DVR used to be connected to the Internet, but it isn’t any longer click here to follow instructions on how to reconnect. A minimum connection speed of 750Kbps (DSL or cable modem) is required. 2Mbps or higher is recommended.

 

First, confirm your Genie model number by pressing and holding the INFO button on your remote until the Info & Test appears on your TV. You’ll see the model number in the “Receiver” line. Make sure the receiver model is HR44. For other HD DVR models, please click here.

There are two ways to connect your Genie HD DVR model HR44 to your home Wi-Fi network. You can connect automatically if your wireless router has Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), which allows you to connect without entering your Wi-Fi network name and password. Or you can connect manually by entering your Wi-Fi network name and password.

 

To check if your router has WPS, look for a button with the logo pictured on the right. Click “Yes” or “No” below, and then just follow the simple steps for connecting your Genie.

Press MENU on your remote.

Use your arrow keys to highlight Settings and press SELECT.

Select Network Setup on the left sidebar, then select Connect Now.

Please note: If your Genie HD DVR was previously connected to your home Wi-Fi network and the connection was lost, select Restore Defaults before selecting Connect Now

You will see this screen while your Genie connects with your wireless router.

Select Continue.

Select Push Button Setup.

Push the WPS button on your router. Genie will automatically detect the device. This may take a minute or two.

Learn how to get online with a Genie or HD DVR

Make sure the Genie has not connected to the Internet already. Press the dash (-) button on the remote control. If you see Internet: Not detected on your screen, you’re in the right place.

Before you begin, you must have the following:
  • Wireless DIRECTV CINEMA Connection Kit.
  • Wireless router connected to your home Internet service.
  • An Internet connection speed of at least 750Kbps (DSL or cable modem). We recommend 2Mbps or higher. 

Go online by setting up the Wireless DIRECTV CINEMA Connection Kit

  1. Press and hold INFO on your remote until the Info & Test screen appears on your TV.
  2. Locate your receiver model number next to Receiver. If you have a newer model (HR44 or HR54), follow these steps to get connected. Continue with the steps below if you have one of the following models: HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, HR24, HR34, or R22.
  3. Press dash (-) on your remote. 
  4. The message SWiM Connected should appear on your screen. If you don't see SWiM Connected on your screen, follow the steps in Set up your Wireless DIRECTV CINEMA Connection Kit.

Setting up Genie HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, or R22- SWiM Connected
If you see SWiM Connected on your screen:
  1. Press and hold INFO on your remote until the Info & Test screen appears.
  2. Select More System Info > Scroll down the page until you see Network status.
