Fallout 4: The Top 15 Graphics Mods So Far

Since Fallout 4's release, the modding community has been hard at work, making it the second-most popular game on the Nexus Mods site with a total of thousand (!) mods to its name. That's a lot of content to sift through to say the least, but let's focus on the graphic mods for now.

RELATED: Fallout 4: 10 Wacky Builds Every Pro Player Should Try At Least Once

All of these mods were designed to give your game a visual boost while overhauling the majority of the game's elements for a better experience. These are the best Fallout 4graphics mods of the bunch, and we've added 5 more to this list to make the trek through the wasteland a more enjoyable one.

Updated on November 20th, by Derek Draven: There are so many graphics mods available for Fallout 4 that it felt wise to include a few more on this list. Just a handful of these mods are capable of dramatically changing the play experience, which is why they should be considered for your next playthrough.

15 Darker Nights

It's hard to feel threatened when Fallout 4's sun goes down. The in-game lighting makes it way too easy to navigate the world around the player, and that can cause a serious break in immersion.

Darker Nights seeks to rectify this problem by offering users a choice of how dark they want their wee hours to be. There are several options to choose from depending on both style and ENB/Reshade use. Simply choose the best one and experience nights the way they were meant to be experienced.

14 Fallout 4 HD Reworked Project Revised

Fallout 4's world is littered with various clutter and other objects that help sell the believability of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Unfortunately, many of these items were textured quickly and leave a lot to be desired.

Mod author HalkHogan created this amazing graphics mod that freshens up a ton of in-game objects with reworked HD textures. Just install the mod and it does the rest. No longer does one have to suffer through low-resolution eyesores.

13 Intensity - In-Game Graphical Customization Tool

For those who like exact control over every facet of their in-game graphics, this mod is the answer. It allows for in-game customization of Fallout 4's lighting, color and other visual settings without the need for a fancy, taxing ENB.

The settings are accessible through a Holotape which allows one to go hog-wild to achieve the exact in-game look they desire. Plus, it's more stable than other graphics tools such as Nvidia Freestyle.

12 Fog Harbor Lite

This mod applies to those who have purchased the Far Harbor DLC pack (highly recommended) and wish to tweak the weathers to be a bit less gloomy. Experienced Harbor masters know that the prevalent fog is as thick as pea soup, and this can put a real damper on the play experience.

RELATED: The 10 Best Builds For Survival In Fallout 4, Ranked

Fog Harbor Lite knocks down much of the weather values to allow for more clarity without sacrificing the eerie atmosphere. This is handy for distance viewing, long-range combat and overall travel.

11 ENB Lights Overhaul

Fans of ENB graphics processing will get a kick out of this amazing mod that amplifies and dramatizes the game's many light sources with increased emissive value. Mod author MaxG3D went in and tweaked every single light mesh in order to achieve this feat, creating a stunning lighting mod in the process.

ENB is necessary in order to activate this mod due to Fallout 4's built-in bloom shader. The ENB DLL acts as a workaround in order for the mod to work its magic. The latest ENB software can be found here, with an installation guide here.

10 SavernX's HD Vanilla Armor

SavernX offers up an excellent vanilla armor texture pack that enhances the existing designs with hand-adjusted 2K variants that not only look great, but are easy on the hardware as well.

In fact, SavernX's pack is so well optimized that his textures clock in at approximately half the size of the Bethesda HD DLC pack, while still looking a heck of a lot better. Weathering, rust effects and distressed fabrics look great, and can serve as an excellent base from which to add on other clothing and outfit mods.

9 FlaconOil's Complete Retexture Project

One of the granddaddies of Fallout 4 graphics mods is undoubtedly FlaconOil's Complete Retexture Project. This heavy duty download includes redone textures, meshes and materials for most of Fallout 4's sprawling graphics content.

With so much that makes up the aesthetic content of Fallout 4, we shudder to think just how long it took FlaconOil to get the mod to where it is today. It deserves to be one of the first in your load order, and a base upon which to build your mod list from there.

8 Better Handmade Weapon Textures

Fallout 4 has been blessed with a ton of third-party weapons mods from other authors, but you shouldn't forget to give the classics a visual bump, either. Better Handmade Weapon Textures does exactly what it says. It overhauls the vanilla weapons with far better texture jobs that rival the originals.

RELATED: Fallout 4: The Top 10 Gameplay Mods So Far

There are even alternate versions of particular weapons textures for you to install, should you prefer the look of one weapon over another. Enhanced shimmer effects, wood and carbon fiber textures make each gun pop against the backdrop of the wasteland.

7 SavernX's Creature Pack DLC

SavernX has released several texture packs for Fallout 4 in the past, but his latest Creature Pack is by far the most well rounded. It replaces textures for most creatures except the Deathclaw, the Ghoul and Robot foes. Truthfully, this isn't a bad thing, as there are many textures to choose for those particular enemies.

SavernX has also wisely optimized each texture according to necessity. No more 4K textures for tiny objects that waste vital GPU memory. This ground-up approach makes the creature pack a mainstay for any Fallout 4 modder.

6 Dynamic Interior Fog Removal

Interior fog sucks. They're awful, they're not the least bit realistic, and any attempts to create an aura of spookiness fails miserably if your computer happens to throw a performance tantrum.

Dynamic Interior Fog Removal instantly knocks out any fog in an interior cell the moment you enter the space, rather than editing cell records which can cause major headaches and instability with other mods. It's by far the best fog removal mod out there, and one that definitely deserves a download.

5 SavernX's Landscape Interior Building

SavernX also turned his attentions towards Fallout 4's DLC packs, creating a texture pack that re-skins buildings, their interiors and landscape elements such as foliage with highly optimized alternatives.

It's an excellent way to rummage through Far Harbor, Nuka World and the Galactic Zone, among many others. This time around, familiar sights will pop up with even more detail than ever before.

4 Fallout Texture Overhaul Power Armors UHD 4K

There are a few Power Armor mods floating around that either give textures the HD treatment, or replace them altogether. Fallout Texture Overhaul Power Armors UHD 4K is one of the absolute best, featuring completely redesigned textures with a choice between 4K goodness and 2K balance, depending on your tastes.

The screenshots speak for themselves. This mod adds a stunning amount of detail and finesse to every single Power Armor, expanding on the original designs while remaining lore friendly. If Power Armors are your thing, this is one mod you'll be happy about!

3 Vivid Fallout - Trees

Dead trees litter the devastated Commonwealth, and things are ugly enough without vanilla textures adding to the drabness. Vivid Fallout - Trees gives a massive boost in visual quality to Fallout 4's trees and stumps to create a more realistic landscape appearance.

They're a huge bump from the simple and boring vanilla trees that the game shipped with, and when combined with other landscaping mods, they can really bring life to an otherwise desolate environment.

2 Natural Landscapes 2K-4K

Natural Landscapes is one truly fantastic graphics mod that overhauls the fidelity and detail of Fallout 4's natural environment. Forest floors, leaf piles and beach sand are just a few elements that receive a massive bump in overall quality.

RELATED: 10 Craziest Quests In Fallout: New Vegas

The mod is an excellent organic baseline to install early on in your load order, allowing you to choose secondary mods to replace individual elements as you see fit. On its own, it gives Fallout 4 a whole new look which transforms the Commonwealth from the ground up (literally).

1 Anamorfus' Enhanced Lights & FX

Anamorfus was responsible for the excellent Skyrim staple graphics mod Enhanced Lights And FX (or ELFX for short), which drastically changed the lighting of the game and turned it into a far more realistic and engaging experience. Thankfully, he did the same for Fallout 4, as well.

ELFX dramatically changes the lighting of interior and exterior cells with ambient and light source overhauls that make sense, feel much more realistic, and will change the way you'll play Fallout 4. The real icing on the cake is the performance; ELFX barely registers a hit on your system, making it one of the most integral graphics mods for your load order.

Fallout 76 ReShade Mod Improves Visual Appearance; Makes Bethesda’s Latest Look Crisp, Less Blurry and More Apocalyptic

fallout 76 reshade mod 1

Want to make Bethesda’s latest Fallout installment look more appealing on PC? This Fallout 76 ReShade Mod makes the game look more crisp, less blurry and more apocalyptic.

The modification uses the popular ReShade post-processing injector to visually enhance the game, and as such, the ReShade mod is required to use this modification.

Fallout 76 Mod Improves Select Textures to 4K with AI Upscaling

Users of the mod are reporting no apparent FPS issues while using it, and some are saying that it feels like playing a movie after installing this ReShade mod for Fallout

We’ve included some additional screenshots from the mod in action below:

Those interested can download the ReShade preset and the ReShade mod itself through Nexusmods here.

Fallout 76, Bethesda's online Fallout prequel, was released for PC, Xbox One and PS4 earlier this week.

Reclamation Day, Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats.

“We’ve been asked forever to bring multiplayer to one of our worlds,” Bethesda's Todd Howard said upon the game's official announcement. “And once we had this idea, we knew it was perfect for Fallout. It’s great to finally share this game and this world with everyone.”

Fallout 4 is already a beautiful game, I was looking to make the game more moody and vibrant, but not too over the top. I focused on some of the effects I enjoy most such as Chromatic Aberration, while trying to not be as performance taxing as an ENB for smooth 4k play. I hope you enjoy!

This Reshade was tested at 4K resolution with Vivid Weathers and Enhanced Lighting and FX. Checkout Nexus Mods to pick them up!
Please note that I select shaders and their settings based on each individual game I create a Reshade for. This takes time, and I hope my efforts show. It seems common for many creators to reuse the same Reshade across games regardless of art style, mood or setting.

Please feel free to take a moment to checkout my other Reshades if you have a moment!

https://sfx.thelazy.net/users/u/iChillum/
Note that the instructions provide guidance on downloading these shaders. Downloading only the necessary shaders will help guarantee additional game performance.

-ChromaticAberration
-ColorMatrix
-Curves
-FakeHDR
-LumaSharpen
-Vibrance
1. Download the ReShade installer from https://reshade.me and run it.

2.Select Fallout4.exe (\%SteamDirectory%\steamapps\common\Fallout 4) and click on the graphics API DirectX 10+ (This was tested with DirectX 11).

3.Confirm the installation of standard shaders when the installer's pop-up message opens, and install the following shaders: CA,ColorMatrix,Curves,HDR,LumaSharpen,Vibrance

4.Download this preset HERE[sfx.thelazy.net], and rename the file to "YOUR_PRESET_NAME.ini". The most important part is changing the ".txt" file to ."ini."

5.Run Fallout 4; be patient as the game can take longer to load all of the ReShade shaders.

6.Open ReShade menu with "Shift+F2" and use the drop down menu to select the .ini file you just put in your bin folder. Keep hitting the continue button until the boxes turn from red to grey/clear.

7.If you are happy with the settings, Click on the Settings tab.

8.Navigate to Usage Mode and change to Performance. This will ensure the best possible performance for low-end systems while running ReShade
While I design and test all of my Reshades with performance in-mind, my hardware settings and resolutions may differ from yours. While mood is important, framerate should be the most important if you are a true gamer. Nothing will be "one size fits all", so play around and find the right compromise of performance and quality.

Fallout 4's Visual Overhaul Mods - Best New Graphics Mods of 2019

Top 20 Best Fallout 4 Graphics Mods For Enhanced Visuals

After trying out Fallout 76 I did what most fans of the franchise would do – I promptly uninstalled the game and booted up Fallout 4 to rinse the bad taste from my tongue.

But as I walked the Wasteland, staring at the same old textures and washed-out color palette, it hit me – I was stuck in the Commonwealth for at least another six years. And I needed to spice things up if I was to have any fun.

I scoured the Nexus for days looking for just the right things to make the game look crisp, appealing, and, in some cases just different.

During this time I found a lot of great mods – ENBs, ReShaders, and improved textures and effects galore.

I obviously didn’t install them all to build my perfect game, but I thought I’d share my findings with other seekers of visual enhancement so that they, too, could build the Fallout 4 of their dreams.

So without further ado here are my top picks for the coolest graphics mods to throw into your game play.

PipBoy Shadows

PipBoy Shadows FO4

Check Out This Mod

We start off our list with a mild but smart change made to enhance the impact of your character’s presence in the environment by allowing the PipBoy’s lights to cast shadows.

It’s much more realistic and immersive, not by making the environment look more real though.

But by giving your brain feedback from your actions.

No longer is the Wasteland a canvas, but a 3D space that you inhabit.

It also applies to headlights, so exploring dark areas will be a whole new experience.

Aviator ReShade

Aviator ReShade FO4

Check Out This Mod

NexusMods user ZorkyTheDude is a fan of Michael Scorsese, and is especially fond of The Aviator and its cinematography.

This mod aspires to bring just that into the world of Fallout 4, highlighting the red and blue colors by turning up the saturation and giving the Wasteland a stylized new look.

It won’t make anything any more realistic, and perhaps it won’t really look better.

But it’s definitely a great way to shake things up if you’ve been playing Fallout 4 for a long time.

Radiant Clouds and Fogs

Radiant Clouds and Fogs FO4

Check Out This Mod

Do you know what people never talk about? Fallout 4’s sky and its clouds.

That’s because they’re unremarkable, and this mod is here to change that.

Thanks to modder Mangaclub you can now replace the boring old vanilla clouds for something a little bit more realistic, adding both depth and grandeur to the skies above the Commonwealth.

Perhaps more importantly, this mod will modify fog for it to look thicker and more realistic.

Immersive First Person Settings

Immersive First Person Settings FO4

Check Out This Mod

One of the most experimental mods in our list is Immersive First Person Settings by user Ppomme, a mod that promises to greatly improve the first-person camera… once all the issues have been worked out.

It works by replacing the first-person camera for a modified third-person camera, letting you see your legs and arms, as well as cast a shadow, instead of becoming a disembodied will with arms to shoot with.

You’ll feel as if your character has mass and exists in the world of Fallout 4. And as long as you don’t run into any of the mod’s bugs, you’ll feel much more immersed.

Enhanced Wasteland Preset

Enhanced Wasteland Preset FO4

Check Out This Mod

Some people prefer mods that present minor enhancements without messing with the spirit and original feel of the game.

One such option comes by the hand of modder Raz3d, who’s put together this ENB to make the Wasteland look somewhat more vibrant, in contrast to the game’s default washed-out look.

I mean, yes, it’s the apocalypse – but over years have already gone by, you know?

Vivid Waters

Vivid Waters FO4

Check Out This Mod

Water is one of those things you can’t simply overlook in a Bethesda game.

I’m sure the developers do their best with what they have, but it never stops looking notoriously fake and basic in comparison to their other graphical achievements.

This mod by user Mangaclub promises to add better reflection, improved opacity and an overall spectacular look to the waters of the Commonwealth with only moderate impact on performance.

After installing it, you’ll notice water won’t look like blue goo anymore, and the transition between water and land is much less jarring as well.

Vivid ENB

Vivid ENB FO4

Check Out This Mod

When I spend a lot of time playing the same game, I generally need it to be visually stimulating so that my mind doesn’t slowly drift away.

It needs to constantly capture my attention, and the best way to do that is through my eyes.

So when I have a game I love to play but its visuals are as washed-out as Fallout 4’s are, I’m always looking for a way to fix that.

Thanks to NexusMods user CoolWavez, the Wasteland can look much more appealing and even fantasy-like, with brighter colors, lush greenery, and radiant waters. It’s not realistic, but it makes the Commonwealth a nice place to be.

Vogue ENB – Realism

Vogue ENB fo4

Check Out This Mod

If rather than radiant visuals you’d rather have a moody, atmospheric Wasteland, then Vogue ENB might be the thing you’re looking for.

Creator GameVogue focused on improving immersion by altering the Depth of Field, improving color correction and tweaking the Antialiasing settings.

With this mod, nights are darker, textures look much sharper, and the color palette is more lifelike.

The best part about it is how little impact it has on your fps.

It’s all gain at virtually no cost.

Enhanced Lights and FX

Enhanced Lights and FX FO4

Check Out This Mod

Another mod to consider in your quest to improve your Fallout 4 game at little performance cost is Enhanced Lights and FX by Anamorfus.

This mod overhauls all lights and related effects, increasing the amount of shadow-casting light sources and making darkness severe enough for you to need a flashlight.

These changes make for a more challenging and realistic experience, while also creating a better mood for interiors.

Visible Galaxy 4K

Visible Galaxy 4K mod

Check Out This Mod

Sometimes, something as simple as changing the sky’s textures can take nighttime from a pesky inconvenience to a breathtaking experience.

This mod is a port from 4K Stars and Galaxies for Skyrim and all it does is replace the nighttime sky textures for 4K imagery of the Milky Way.

Not only does it look amazing, but it’s also more realistic – over years after civilization grinds to a halt, both artificial light and air pollution would be virtually non-existent.

Fallout 4 Enhanced Color Correction

Fallout 4 Enhanced Color

Check Out This Mod

If you’re not scared to step away from the vanilla game’s art direction, perhaps ChaosWWW’s Enhanced Color Correction might be worth checking out.

It endeavors to make the Wasteland more vivid by improving contrast and the quality of colors – that’s to say, it makes the game look less washed out.

Never has that vault suit looked so blue.

Characters also look somewhat more healthy thanks to a subtle red tint on their skin, and both shadows and highlights have more impact on the game’s look.

9. Darker Nights

Darker Nights mod

Check Out This Mod

There’s a reason so many mods in the Nexus recommend you to install Darker Nights by Unforbidable – it’s amazing, and it costs you nothing in terms of fps.

It simply makes the Commonwealth darker at night and indoors, to the point where the use of a flashlight is justified, in contrast with vanilla nighttime, which is essentially a permanent full moon.

It may be a small change, sure.

But it can deeply improve your experience, making nighttime more important and reminding you of the dangers lurking in the dark.

8. Ultra Interior Lighting

Ultra Interior Lighting fo4

Check Out This Mod

Once you’ve installed Darker Nights, it’s time to address lighting.

Among my favorite mods for improved illumination is Ultra Interior Lighting by Gargorias, which takes full advantage of the engine’s capacity for unlimited shadow-casting lights by adding many more of them to every indoor area, mostly by hand.

It’ll have a detrimental impact on performance, of course, but if you have the resources to run it, it’d be silly not to.

7. Ultra Exterior Lighting

Ultra Exterior Lighting

Check Out This Mod

Even better than our previous entry is Ultra Exterior Lighting, which does the same thing to outdoor areas.

This will make you glad you installed Darker Nights, as it makes the Wasteland a much more immersive and realistic place to explore.

It’s amazing how much work Gargorias put into manually replacing light sources for shadow-casting ones, and the amount of people endorsing this mod seems to show how much of a good job they did.

6. Ultra-Low Graphics Tool

Ultra-Low Graphics Tool FA4

Check Out This Mod

There used to be a time where my less-than-ideal specs kept me from playing lots of amazing games. Fortunately, those dark times have passed, but I’ll never forget the struggle.

To help anyone going through the same thing, I’d like to highlight the Ultra-Low Graphics Tool by Lyzik.

Instead of taking Fallout to the max, this will take it to the minimum possible to allow anyone to run it on their toasters.

Less shadow quality, disabled godrays, stupidly short draw distances and disabling a bunch of post-processing effects are the means to a considerable performance gain.

It’s a small price to pay for the Fallout 4 experience on a $ laptop.

5. FO4 Blurriness Remover

FO4 Blurriness Remover

Check Out This Mod

Due to my low-spec-gaming background, I’ve become an expert at finding the most efficient graphics settings to marry the best performance and looks.

In Fallout 4, achieving this may be as easy as installing the FO4 Blurriness Remover from LasagnaTheories.

To put it simply, this mod removes the blurry effect that’s cast over everything that’s far enough, and while you’re moving.

This may make the Wasteland look a tad more videogame-y. But it’s a valid sacrifice to make the game look so much crisper without losing any fps at all.

4. The Enhancer

The Enhancer FA4

Check Out This Mod

Another option aimed at those who’re at the exact recommended specs or slightly below is The Enhancer, which promises to improve graphical fidelity at a very low performance cost.

It’s made by Looping, famous for their Photorealistic Commonwealth mod, and all it does is optimize textures and tweak some settings to make the game look more natural and a bit more colorful.

3. Photorealistic Commonwealth

Photorealistic Commonwealth FA4

Check Out This Mod

However, after so many years, chances are your system far exceeds what’s needed for vanilla Fallout, and you’re hungry to take your system to the limit.

That’s where Looping’s Photorealistic Commonwealth comes in, utilizing custom shaders and tweaked post-processing options to make the Wasteland look as lifelike as possible.

The mod aims, quite simply, to make your screenshots look indistinguishable from actual photography, and it largely succeeds.

To top it off, it includes an in-game user manual and a settings interface.

2. WET – Water Enhancement Textures

Water Enhancement Textures fa4

Check Out This Mod

And if you still have some resources to spare, you have to give the WET mod a chance to take your aquatic experiences to the next level.

Water Enhancement Textures by SparrowPrince is a work of technical ingenuity that employs textures generated from simulations of how real water would act to improve in-game water bodies.

It gives them flow and motion, generally making them look not only realistic but jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Along with that, it improves the quality of mist, fog and spray textures, as well as waterfall models, with spectacular results.

1. Uber Fidelity Suite

Uber Fidelity Suite

Check Out This Mod

Some mods are so amazing they have a hard time staying bound to a single game.

That’s the case with the Uber Fidelity Suite, one of the most appreciated graphics mods in The Witcher 3 history… which has been ported to Fallout 4 by user Xiorantha.

The mod tries to stay true to the artistic direction and style of Fallout 4, while also pushing everything towards its maximum potential.

It’ll imbue your game with a level of graphical fidelity not achievable by any other means, opening your eyes to a whole new world of details you never even knew were there.

It makes your game highly cinematic, but since it was designed to be used in actual gameplay, the effects go beyond beautiful vistas and into the heat of battle.

You’ll definitely need a high-end setup to run this.

But if you have it, you won’t ever be able to go back to vanilla.
