For example, in addition to your retirement plan investments, you should consider any investments (including those in an Individual Retirement Account) and savings accounts.

Investing outside the United States involves risks, such as currency fluctuations, periods of illiquidity and price volatility, as more fully described in the prospectus. These risks may be heightened in connection with investments in developing countries.

Fund results and expense ratio information listed above apply to Class A shares only. The results and expense ratio information for the investments in your plan may differ.

A bevy of team transitions and remaining uncertainty have dropped the Morningstar Analyst Rating of American Funds Fundamental Investors' cheapest shares to Silver and it pricier ones to Bronze, but this fund's flexible profile still makes it an attractive option.

Although the fund's seven named managers are an impressive group, lineup changes have been considerable since 2018. The fund has seen three departures, including two retirements, and has publicly named four managers and added an analyst group. Even so, unnamed managers still collectively oversee at least a tenth of the fund's assets, which is more than usual, and creates some uncertainty about this team's identity.

American's record of eventually finding the right talent mix adds reassurance, though, as does the managers' latitude here to invest in line with their best ideas. It starts with an income target focused on matching rather than exceeding the S&P 500's yield (recently about 1.7%), which means the fund can own non-dividend-paying growth stocks, such as top-five holding Facebook FB.

The managers also have more freedom to cross geographic boundaries than do most large-blend Morningstar Category peers. Indeed, they regularly take advantage of the fund’s ability to stash up to 35% of its assets in non-U.S. stocks. As of year-end 2020, the fund's top-decile 20% international stake included top-15 holding Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company TSM.

The fund's tendency to tread heavily overseas and willingness to differ from the benchmark and most peers in other ways can make it look out of step over prolonged periods, as it has the past three years. Although TSMC helped the fund in 2020, for example, non-U.S. exposure was a headwind overall. Underweighting Apple AAPL also hurt as concerns about its anemic growth in earnings before interest and taxes kept most of the managers away.

Prior to its recent slump, however, the fund had beaten the benchmark for three straight years, including 2016, when its valuation-sensitive style came back into favor. Over the long term, this fund should reward patient investors.
