Naruto: Who Are The 8 Hokages In The Series?

The Naruto franchise has always centered on its titular character's eagerness to leave behind a grand legacy and become a great ninja, primarily through his ultimate goal of becoming Hokage. In the village of Konohagakure, the Hokage is the primary political leader, with all of the power and responsibility that position entails.

Throughout the anime and manga series, as well as its continuation Boruto, there have been a total of seven official Hokage referenced in Konoha's history, as well as one notable Hokage candidate with a brief reign of power. Three of these Hokages were dead prior to the start of the series, but all of them have had a great impact on the story and characters of Naruto, while also being impressive ninjas in their own right.

8 Hashirama Senju - First Hokage

Konohagakure was founded by friendly rivals Madaraa Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, with the latter becoming the first Hokage in village history. Hashirama's dream of world peace was a guiding principle throughout Konoha's history, and his position of power comes from his renown as the "God of Shinobi," one of the strongest ninjas in the franchise.

Notably, Hashirama wanted Madara to be the first Hokage, but his brother Tobirama Senju insisted upon a democratic election that led to Hashirama's selection. Although he had many abilities at his disposal, Hashirama was most known for his Wood Release technique that allowed him to manipulate wood and plants. Hashirama would go on to name Tobirama as his successor before his death, and later would be temporarily resurrected by Sasuke Uchiha and Orochimaru.

7 Tobirama Senju - Second Hokage

Following Hashirama's death, his brother, Tobirama Senju, was inaugurated as the second Hokage in Konoha's history. Tobirama's time as Hokage was transformative, creating many institutions in the village like the Academy and the Anbu special forces squad, while also placing emphasis on village loyalty over clan loyalty.

The Uchiha clan resisted this shift in ideology, beginning the fateful divide between their clan and Konoha leadership. Almost as powerful as his brother, Tobirama was capable of using many ninja techniques, although he was most known for his Water Release mastery, as well as his invention of the Flying Thunder God Technique. He was resurrected temporarily alongside the other deceased Hokage during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

6 Hiruzen Sarutobi - Third Hokage

A student of both previous Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi is known across the ninja world for his versatile power and ability with his signature staff, inheriting Hashirama's nickname "God of Shinobi." Hiruzen was appointed to the Hokage position by Tobirama shortly before his death. The Third Hokage was known for his benevolent leadership style, which he attempted to balance by allowing Danzō Shimura to lead the ruthless Root organization.

As Hokage, Hiruzen also took on the training of Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, hoping that Orochimaru would succeed him as Hokage, but ultimately deciding on Minato Namikaze (a student of Jiraiya's) as his successor upon retirement. After Minato's death, Hiruzen took up the Hokage office again, dying in battle against Orochimaru during the invasion of Konoha in one of the anime's most rewatchable episodes. Later, he was temporarily resurrected by Orochimaru and Sasuke during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

5 Minato Namikaze - Fourth Hokage

When Hiruzen retired, he chose Minato Namikaze, student of Jiraiya and eventual teacher of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin Nohara, as his successor. Notably, during his time as Hokage, Minato and Kushina Uzumaki had a child, Naruto Uzumaki, on the same night that the Nine-Tailed Fox attacked Konoha.

Minato fought off the Nine-Tailed Fox, which had previously been sealed within Kushina, ultimately sealing it in his newborn son before dying. His incredible powers in battle netted him the nickname "Konoha's Yellow Flash," and included his mastery over the Flying Thunder God Technique and the creation of his signature Rasengan, which his son would go on to master. He was the last Hokage temporarily resurrected by Orochimaru and Sasuke during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

4 Tsunade - Fifth Hokage

The only female Hokage in Naruto is Tsunade, a former student of Hiruzen and peer of Jiraiya and Orochimaru who is known for her strength and mastery of healing abilities. She is the granddaughter of the first Hokage Hashirama Senju and his wife Mito Uzumaki, as well. Notably, her brother Nawaka and late lover Dan previously had ambitions of becoming Hokage, which endears her to the ambitious Naruto.

Tsunade reluctantly becomes Hokage after Hiruzen's death, needing to be convinced by Jiraiya to take on the role, but she remains in the office for the majority of the series. Her reign is considered bountiful for Konoha, despite the many challenges she faces and the fact that she is temporarily put in a coma after Pain attacks. Notably, Tsunade also appoints her apprentice and Dan's niece, Shizune, as an assistant, a position that she has remained in for future Hokage.

3 Danzō Shimura - Sixth Hokage Candidate

Although he was never an official Hokage, Danzō Shimura is notorious for his ruthless reign as the Sixth Hokage candidate when Tsunade was out of commission following Pain's attack on Konoha. Danzō's history extends back before the beginning of the series, when he created the Anbu subdivision Root, known for its unscrupulous and ruthless tactics.

Although he always had the village's best interests in mind, Danzō was a ruthless leader and sometimes an evil villain who believed both Tsunade and Hiruzen had previously led Konoha into a state of weakness that he intended to fix. A fearsome ninja, Danzō was skilled at many jutsu and most known for his several Sharingan eyes along his arm, which was also imbued with Hashirama's DNA. At the Kage Summit, Danzō represented Konoha and called for Sasuke's execution, although he died in battle against Sasuke and Tobi.

2 Kakashi Hatake - Sixth Hokage

At the end of Naruto's run, Tsunade retired from the role of Hokage following the Fourth Shinobi World War, naming Naruto's teacher and Minato's student Kakashi as the Sixth Hokage. Known for his Sharingan eye and mastery of lightning-based jutsu, Kakashi is a powerful ninja whose ideology is centered on cooperation to build a better future for Konoha.

Kakashi's previous service to Konoha includes his time as an Anbu agent and his close relationship as an advisor to Tsunade during her time in office. Although he is initially overwhelmed by taking on the role of Hokage, Tsunade helps ease him into it, and his reign is focused on building a better world for the future, specifically Naruto's generation. At the beginning of Boruto, Kakashi has retired as Hokage and has named his former student Naruto as the Seventh Hokage.

1 Naruto Uzumaki - Seventh Hokage

The only Hokage to be inaugurated after the end of Naruto's initial run, Naruto Uzumaki himself is the Seventh Hokage and the only Hokage of Boruto's run. As the son of Minato and student of Kakashi, Naruto is primed to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming Hokage, as he is seen as one of the strongest ninjas in the world following his role in the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Upon Kakashi's retirement, he bequeaths the office of Hokage to Naruto, who has more than proven himself as a powerful ninja and the "Hero of the Hidden Leaf." This master of Shadow Clone Jutsu and Rasengan has had a challenging reign as Hokage, much like Tsunade's, with enemies like the Ōtsutsuki Clan and Kara creating problems. It is unknown who will succeed Naruto as Hokage, but some prime candidates include his friend and protégé Konohamaru Sarutobi (who is also Hiruzen's grandson) and his children, Boruto and Himawari.

Naruto: Every Hokage Ranked By Strength

The Hokage are some of the strongest forces in all of Naruto but which among their ranks is the strongest of all?

The Hokage is a prestigious title passed on to Konohagakure's strongest, and most capable shinobi in Naruto. Being the first shinobi village in existence, Konoha was also the first to elect a Kage, which ultimately led to the creation of the shinobi village system throughout the five great nations.

RELATED: Naruto: The 10 Strongest Clans, Ranked According To Strength

Ever since Konoha was created, it has always had a powerful Hokage at its helm, and it's their duty to protect the people and defend them from incoming threats. Konoha has seen seven Kage rise to this position so far. Here are all the seven Hokage of Konoha ranked according to their strength in Naruto.

7 Kakashi Hatake

Once famed as the Copy Ninja, Kakashi Hatake was one of Konoha's elite Jonin who went on to become the Sixth Hokage of the village. Thanks to his extremely high level of skill, Kakashi had always risen through the ranks quickly. He was made a Jonin by the age of thirteen, and as such, was always headed for greatness. In the Fourth Great Ninja War, Kakashi did enough to earn the spot of Hokage, although, despite that, he is nowhere near the strongest in the series.

This is primarily because Kakashi, as a Hokage, had lost his Sharingan. While his chakra levels were better, as a result, it also meant that Kakashi lost the reason why he was special. During his time as the Hokage of Konoha, Kakashi was not the strongest in the village, with the likes of Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke all being levels above him.

6 Tsunade Senju

Taking the position of Hokage after Hiruzen Sarutobi's passing, Tsunade Senju was chosen as the Fifth Hokage of Konohagakure. Being one of Hiruzen's students, it isn't hard to imagine that she was strong as well. Together, with Orochimaru and Jiraiya, Tsunade formed the Legendary Sannin of Konoha who were famous across the land. As one of the Sannin, her fighting capabilities were immense in the series, and she was capable of fighting against characters like Madara to some extent.

Tsunade's specialty was her 'Chakra Enhanced Strength' Jutsu, and other than that, she could also use the Forbidden Jutsu of Byakugou. In the Five Kage vs Madara fight, she was perhaps the most active Kage on the battlefield, both fighting the enemy, and healing all of those around her. Despite that, Tsunade takes the number 6 spot on the list.

5 Tobirama Senju

Tobirama Senju was the second Hokage of Konoha and he succeeded his brother, Hashirama, to the position. Possessing a high intellect, Tobirama set up the Konoha Academy and the Police Force. He led his village in the First Great Ninja War, where he ended up losing his life to Kinkaku and Ginkaku.

RELATED: Naruto: All Members Of Konoha 11, Ranked

As a shinobi, his skills were immense. He was a water-style master, yet proficient in all five nature transformations. Apart from that, Tobirama also had access to a lot of Forbidden Ninjutsu, some of which he invented himself. It goes without saying that he was one of Konoha's strongest ninjas of all time in the Naruto series.

4 Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze, also known as the Yellow Flash, was Konohagakure's Fourth Hokage. In his generation, Minato possessed skills second to none. In the Third Great Ninja War, he defeated thousands of enemies all alone and was partly responsible for the peace that followed after.

Minato knew three nature transformations, but his skills lied in his speed which was great enough to take even the Fourth Raikage by surprise. As Konoha's Fourth Hokage, he was strong enough to fight Obito and Kurama at once, all the while protecting the village simultaneously, which definitely says a lot about his capabilities as a Kage.

3 Hiruzen Sarutobi

The Third Hokage of Konoha, Hiruzen Sarutobi was renowned as 'The Professor' and the 'God of Shinobi'. It is said that in his prime, Hiruzen was stronger than ever other Hokage who came before him, and yes, that includes Hashirama Senju. Unfortunately, a glimpse of his skills in his prime was never delivered. Despite this, even as an old man, Hiruzen was extremely powerful! Despite being way over 60 years in age, he showed his massive power by fighting Orochimaru, Edo Hashirama, and Edo Tobirama all on his own, which often goes unnoticed.

Hiruzen earned the title of 'The Professor' from having knowledge about all that Jutsu that exist in Konohagakure. His Will of Fire urged him to call every citizen in the village his family, and it was his thinking that molded Naruto's thinking as the Hokage of the village.

2 Hashirama Senju

Hashirama Senju was the First Hokage of Konoha, and one of the strongest characters in the entire series. Being the First Hokage, he possessed the strength that was enough to counter Madara Uchiha in combat. Hashirama Senju was a master of all five nature transformations, but his specialty was his Wood Release Kekkei Genkai. Using this power, he was capable enough to combat both Madara Uchiha and the Nine-Tails at the same time, which is extremely impressive, to say the least.

Hashirama's powers were further enhanced by his Sage Mode, which is what made him the strongest shinobi of his generation. His Sage Mode, when combined with his Wood Release ninjutsu, made him unstoppable. Although Hashirama was a fantastic shinobi, he certainly wasn't the strongest.

1 Naruto Uzumaki

The Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki is the current leader of Konoha and also the strongest of all the Kage. Although Naruto's start was shaky, over the years, he has mastered various Jutsu and overcome his weaknesses with sheer hard work. Thanks to his various abilities, such as the Sage Mode, the power of Kurama, and the Six Paths powers, Naruto is deemed as the strongest ninja to ever exist, with the only one capable of rivaling him being Sasuke Uchiha.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Naruto received half of the Sage of Six Paths' powers, along with the chakra of the remaining Tailed Beasts, making him a pseudo-ten-tails Jinchūriki. He's only gotten stronger over the years, and right now, he's grown to a level where he can rival the Gods of the Narutoverse, such as Momoshiki Otsutsuki. Undoubtedly, Naruto is the strongest Hokage to have ever lived, and it is unlikely that anyone will ever surpass him.

Naruto: 10 Things Every Fan Should Know About Hiruzen Sarutobi

Hiruzen Sarutobi was the Third Hokage of Konohagakure and among the most influential characters in the world of Naruto. He was the very first Hokage to be revealed in the series and despite being quite old, he was feared across the world of shinobi.

RELATED: Naruto: Every Major Clan's Strongest Member, Ranked

Hiruzen Sarutobi was also known as The Professor because he possessed a tremendous amount of knowledge on Jutsu, something that even Orochimaru openly acknowledged. The Third Hokage inspired countless shinobi in the story, however, the series didn't focus on his tale much. Nonetheless, Kishimoto made sure to give some intriguing details about him to the fans.

10 He Was Known As The God Of Shinobi

The Third Hokage is one of the very few people in the Naruto world who have earned the title of "God of Shinobi." The first of them was Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. Following him, Hashirama Senju attained the same title due to his tremendous strength and finally, Hiruzen Sarutobi gained it as well.

According to some, Hiruzen was the strongest of all Hokage in his prime days, however, fans never got to see a glimpse of his early days as a ninja in the story.

9 He Was A Part Of Team Tobirama

Hiruzen Sarutobi started his life as a shinobi under Tobirama Senju. He was also joined by his teammates, Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado.

All three of Tobirama's students achieved greatness as Hiruzen Sarutobi went on to become the Hokage, while Koharu and Homura were the village elders and were highly respected by everyone, even the Kage.

8 He Was Named The Hokage By Tobirama Senju

Hiruzen was chosen as the Third Hokage by one of his teachers, Tobirama Senju. As a Kage, Tobirama had the authority to choose his successor and for him, Hiruzen was perfect for this role as he had embodied the Will of Fire as well.

Later on, Hiruzen Sarutobi wanted Minato Namikaze to succeed him as the Fourth Hokage in a similar fashion and that's exactly what ended up happening as the plot moved forward.

7 He Became The Hokage During The First Great Ninja War

Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage of Konohagakure, died during the First Great Ninja War even after trying to sue for peace with all the shinobi nations. Following him, Tobirama Senju took the reins and tried his best to stabilize the village and win the war.

RELATED: Naruto: 5 Ways Kakashi Changed Throughout The Show (& 5 Times He Regressed)

Unfortunately, Tobirama's death came during the First Great Ninja War as well, where he fought the Gold and Silver Brothers. Before dying, he named Hiruzen Sarutobi as his successor and then proceeded to use himself as a decoy to let him escape.

6 He Was Potentially The Youngest Hokage Ever

Hiruzen Sarutobi was one of the youngest ever Kage and possibly the youngest Hokage to be elected in the Naruto story. Back when Konohagakure was fighting the First Great Ninja War, Hiruzen was merely a teen and was already fighting with everything he had.

He was given the position of Hokage by Tobirama Senju during the war when he was still quite young. Although the exact age when he became the Hokage was never given to us, he was arguably the youngest to take up the position, with Minato being the other possible option next to him.

5 He Was The Longest-Serving Hokage

The reigns of the First and the Second Hokage didn't last long. Hashirama created the village with Madara's help, however, ended up dying soon afterward. Tobirama didn't rule for long either, however, Hiruzen Sarutobi did.

He got his village through the First Great Ninja War, led them into the Second Great Ninja War, and even the Third Great Ninja War after that. Hiruzen was the longest-serving Hokage that Konoha had and also the one who inspired most of the shinobi to learn about the Will of Fire.

4 His Father Was A Legendary Shinobi

Hiruzen was from the famous Sarutobi Clan who are known to have been one of the very first to join Konohagakure after it was formed by the Uchiha and the Senju. Lots of legendary shinobi have emerged from this clan and Hiruzen's father, Sasuke Sarutobi was one of them.

RELATED: Naruto: 5 Times Kakashi Was The Best Mentor (& 5 When It Was Master Jiraiya)

While most details about him aren't known, he was great enough for Mikoto and Fugaku to name their second-born child, Sasuke Uchiha, after.

3 He Had The Brightest Will Of Fire

Hiruzen Sarutobi was personally trained by Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, and Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage. He inherited their Will of Fire and made sure it grew stronger than ever within him.

From there onwards, he passed it on to a generation of shinobi, young and old alike. Hiruzen went on to pass it on to the Sannin, and even the generation after them.

2 His Ideals Were A Mix Of Hashirama And Tobirama's

Being the student of the First and the Second, it is no surprise that both of them inspired his way of thinking to some extent. Hiruzen was described as the perfect balance between Hashirama Senju's soft approach and Tobirama's strict approach.

He wanted everyone to be kind and sought a future where kids would never have to go to war, however, he also knew when to be harsh and the sacrifices necessary to protect that peace.

1 He Was Originally A Dog

Weirdly enough, the creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, originally wanted Hiruzen Sarutobi to be a dog for some reason. At some point, he switched this idea and decided to make him a human.

According to Kishimoto, the idea of him being a dog felt too weird. It is also interesting to note that Naruto Uzumaki was supposed to be a fox at first, but once again, Kishimoto decided not to go ahead with that idea and made him the Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails instead.

Family tree of Naruto History of the Shinobi World - Ninja World -

(猿飛ヒルゼン, Sarutobi Hiruzen) was the Third Hokage (三代目火影, Sandaime Hokage; Literally meaning "Third Fire Shadow") who hailed from Konohagakure's Sarutobi clan. He was part of Team Tobirama alongside Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane under the leadership of the Second Hokage. He was also trained by the First Hokage and would later become the teacher of the Legendary SanninTsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru and the third man to hold the title God of Shinobi (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami).

Born into the Sarutobi clan to Sasuke, Hiruzen was a prodigy who truly stood out in talent. He and his former team-mates, Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, were students of Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage. He was also trained by Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage. While once a close friend of Danzō Shimura during their early childhood, Danzō developed a one-sided rivalry with Hiruzen who always managed to be a step ahead of him. During the First Shinobi World War, Team Tobirama along with Danzō, Kagami Uchiha and Torifu Akimichi were pursued by enemy Kumogakure ninja. Knowing that one of them would need to be a sacrificial decoy so the others can escape, Hiruzen volunteered. However, Tobirama chose to be the decoy instead, naming Hiruzen his successor while driving a further wedge between his student and Danzō. Later in his life, he married Biwako and became the father of at least two children, Asuma Sarutobi and at least one other, who has yet to be seen in the series. This unnamed child would later give Hiruzen a grandson:Konohamaru Sarutobi and Asuma later, another grandchild.

Prior to the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen became the teacher of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade.[3] Coming to appreciate Orochimaru's natural talent, Hiruzen saw him as a once in a lifetime genius.[4] However, while explaining to Orochimaru the symbolic significance of a white snake the boy found near his parents' grave, Hiruzen unknowing caused his pupil to go down a dark road while attempting to steer him away from it.[5] After serving as Hokage for many years, Hiruzen started looking for a successor to the title. While he hoped to be able to give the position to Orochimaru, he saw that he only was interested in the power it offered.[6][4] Though he turned to Jiraiya,[7] Hiruzen instead named Jiraiya's student Minato Namikaze as his successor.

In the aftermath of the Third Shinobi World War, knowing the danger if Kurama were to break loose during the childbirth of its currentjinchūriki, Kushina Uzumaki, Hiruzen assigned Biwako and a few ANBU for security to oversee the birthing process in a secured location on the outskirts of the village. However, also learning of Kushina's pregnancy, a masked man found the location and slaughtered the protection and maternity detail before releasing Kurama to destroy Konoha. Unaware of how Kurama got loose, Hiruzen nonetheless led the ninja in subduing the Nine-Tails before Minato arrived and transported himself, and the tailed beast away from from the village. Hiruzen soon arrived at the scene when Minato decided to seal Kurama into his own son, unable to intervene because of the erected barrier.[9] With Minato dead, Hiruzen once more assumed the role of active Hokage while deciding to protect the orphaned child by giving him his mother's last name to conceal his relation to Konoha's Yellow Flash.[10] With this, Hiruzen also passed a law in the village that no one was to speak of the beast sealed within the young man and hoped that Minato's dying wish that his son be seen as a hero be honoured, but the people who had lived first-hand the devastation that the Nine-Tails could bring forth were unable do this. And though most obeyed Hiruzen's law — with those who didn't being severely punished — the children of the village, also came to fear and dislike Naruto, simply because their parents did.

Some time after resuming his post, Hiruzen began investigating a number of disappearances within Konoha and learned that Orochimaru was behind them. Having used those that he kidnapped as test subjects in his quest to gain immortality, Orochimaru allowed his former master a chance to kill him. Ultimately, Hiruzen could not bring himself to do it, allowing Orochimaru to escape.[12] A few years later, Hiruzen learned of the Uchiha Clan's plot against the village and attempted to find a peaceful resolution for both sides. However, before reaching such an alternative, Danzō inveigled Itachi Uchiha toslaughter his kin.[13] However, prior to Itachi leaving the village as a missing-nin, the young man sought out the Third and begged him to protect his little brother and not tell him the truth, and Hiruzen obliged.[14]

In the anime, Hiruzen assigned Yakumo of the Kurama clan to hone her genjutsu under Kurenai Yūhi.[15] However, Kurenai learns of the evil persona within Yakumo and Hiruzen regretfully gives her permission to seal Yakumo's abilities to prevent the alter ego from killing Yakumo at the cost of ending the Kurama clan.

Hiruzen was one of the most powerful shinobi in history, so much so that he was admired as the God of Shinobi (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami) in his prime, and was said to be the strongest Hokage that Konoha has ever had.[1][21][22] Even in his old age, he was also said to be the strongest of all the five Kage at the time of his death.[23] Enma commented on his battle with Orochimaru, saying that it was "miserable" compared to his prime, even though he had clearly been able to hold his own against Orochimaru and two former Hokage without losing his composure. He was also the longest living and longest reigning Hokage. Hiruzen also had keen senses, being able to track down the former Hokage under Hashirama Senju's Bringer-of-Darkness Technique.[24]

Over his lifetime Hiruzen had accumulated a vast knowledge of ninjutsu. This is shown when he witnesses Kurama's sealing into Naruto Uzumaki, where, after observing the Fourth making hand seals, he immediately discerned which technique he intended to use. Although he concedes that in his current state, he might not be able to fight in equal terms with his former student, Hiruzen remains very confident of his abilities; when confronted with the reincarnated First and Second Hokage, after being told by his predecessors that they had no choice but to fight him, Hiruzen simply told them to prepare to be defeated.

Chakra Prowess and Control []

Even in his old age, his chakra was noted for being very strong. Similar to Hashirama, Hiruzen's chakra causes a dense effect on the atmosphere when released, cracking the building he and Orochimaru were battling on.[25] Furthermore, he was known for having immense reserves of chakra in his youth.[26] Despite his diminished reserves of chakra in his old age, he also showed great chakra control, needing only the minimum amount of chakra to use each technique.

Taijutsu []

In terms of taijutsu, Hiruzen displayed a very high level of skill. He was able to counter Hashiramaand Tobirama in close combat. He was also quick-thinking as during their confrontation he was able to place explosive tags on each of them without them, nor Orochimaru even knowing. After summoning Enma, he was able to break through wooden branches with ease.

Even when robbed of his sight, he could still defend himself from Hashirama's and Tobirama's assaults, blocking all their attacks to prepare for his Dead Demon Consuming Seal. After sealing both former Hokage, he faced Orochimaru in single combat. Despite his sealing parts of his soul away in the Shinigami, as well as fighting for a prolonged amount of time before he engaged Orochimaru one-on-one, he effortlessly disarmed him of his sword.

Ninjutsu Edit[]

[1]Hiruzen using the Dead Demon Consuming Seal.

Hiruzen was also called The Professor (プロフェッサー, Purofessā)[27], due to his mastery of all forms of shinobi combat, and his vast knowledge of techniques, purportedly knowing all the techniques within Konoha.[28] In the anime, even Danzō, Hiruzen's life-long rival, openly acknowledged the Hokage's sheer prowess in utilising any technique as unsurpassed.[29] To watch over the village, he would use the Telescope Technique, allowing him to observe others through his crystal ball over long distances.[30] He was also an expert in fūinjutsu, being capable of using the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. Due to his old age and waning strength he was forced to get into close range of an enemy in order for it to take effect, though he was still capable of sealing the souls of the First and Second Hokage and part of Orochimaru's soul. He is also adept at using barrier ninjutsu, capable of erecting a Kage-calibre barrier powerful enough to trap the Ten-Tails.

Shurikenjutsu []

Out of his various specialties, Hiruzen was highly skilled in the use of shuriken based techniques, one of which was the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique. With this technique, he could create a thousand clones of a single thrown shuriken in an instant to overwhelm the opponent with the extreme difficultly in evading them all. This method also meant that he didn't have stock up on a lot of shuriken. He could also use the technique with the larger version of shuriken, increasing the technique's range and penetration power.[32]

Nature Transformation []

[2]Hiruzen using Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet.

Sarutobi was highly skilled in elemental ninjutsu, using Fire Releaseand Earth Release. Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet allowed him to exhale a powerful stream of fire from his mouth. Earth Release: Earth Flow River created a river of mud beneath the opponent to throw them off balance, and he could use the mud with Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet, which creates a dragon's head that launches mud balls at an opponent. He had also been shown to be adept in combining elemental techniques, as seen when he ignited the mud ball projectiles with Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet, creating a volley of hot mud that can melt nearly anything. Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall allowed Hiruzen to spit a stream of mud that solidifies into a protective shield.

Summoning Technique Edit[]

[3]A young Hiruzen with Enma.

Hiruzen also had a personal summon: Monkey King: Enma, who was capable of turning into a diamond-hard staff, which could alter its length and width at will, or become a cage to protect the summoner. The staff was Hiruzen's weapon of choice as he showed great proficiency in wielding it; he successfully pushedck Kurama with it during its attack on Konoha.[33] Enma could also manifest parts of his body and attack an enemy with his claws and fangs, which added an element of surprise.
