Driving Innovation with Passion at Mothers Finest Urban Family Farm
Every Friday on social media, we post a Farm Feature Friday showcasing one of our dedicated North Carolina farmers. Samantha Foxx of Mothers Finest Urban Family Farm is one of those farmers. The #FarmFeatureFriday campaign will run through December on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Be sure to tune in each Friday afternoon on social and help show your support for our local farmers!
Although she grew up in the farming industry, in an area that was rich in agriculture, Samantha Foxx only recently reconnected with the passion that influenced her childhood. I grew up in eastern North Carolina, where I would help my uncle on his tobacco farm, Samantha said, however, it was just three years ago when I took a class at N.C. Cooperative Extension that led to the true awakening of Mothers Finest Urban Family Farm.
Operating today on over seven acres of land in Winston-Salem, the farm grows a variety of flowers, herbs and vegetables as well as raises bees. One of the more popular things that we grow is our Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Pepper, Samantha said, which we started growing because my father is West Indian and we wanted to add some culture to what we are growing on our farm. They also offer a variety of value-added products on the farm, including a fire tonic and elderberry syrup. Our value-added products are really about taking on community wellness as a whole because food is our medicine, she said. These products have proven to help knock out mucus, boost immunity and improve gut health.
Although there is no true typical day on the farm, Samantha is learning to borrow time from many different places and prioritize tasks on a day-to-day basis. Its a very demanding lifestyle and you have to be flexible since there is no concrete plan each day, she said, some days we are harvesting crops in the field or selling products at the farmers market and other days we may be chasing down a whole hive of bees.
Although the everyday hustle can be draining, Samantha truly enjoys working alongside her family and seeing the difference she is making within the community. Its the small moments that make the biggest differences, such as educating the customer on the aspects of farming or seeing the spark in the eyes of a child as they learn how to become a beekeeper, she said, thats when you begin to realize that you really are making a difference and changing peoples lives.
Products from Mothers Finest Urban Farm can be found at their on-site farm store, online at their website or at the Cobblestone Farmers Market. Some of their products, such as watermelons, are also used in a variety of dishes at A Noble Grille in Winston-Salem. Its beautiful to know that someone is sitting at a table right now because because of the food we worked so hard to provide, Samantha said.
In addition to providing for the community, Samantha is also president of a non-profit called Middle of the Root that helps provide packages of fresh produce to seniors and donate bee hives within the community. Ten percent of all sales at Mothers Finest Urban Family Farm also goes to help the nonprofit Be Younited. I believe in building up our community, she said, and one of the ways that we do that is by supporting our farmers, eating local and getting to know our neighbors.
In the future, Samantha hopes to continue growing the farm and leave a legacy for her kids that will outlast many generations. When she is not farming, you can find Samantha singing and swaying to the beat of Bob Marleys song To The Rescue.

Luxury gifts moms will love
Finding the perfect gift for anyone can be hard, but finding the perfect gift for a mom can be nearly impossible. It’s hard to express how much a mother figure means to you, and it can feel difficult to pick out a gift that measures up. Because mothers are incredibly hardworking and deserving of a token of gratitude, it’s nice to show appreciation and make them feel special. There are plenty of high-end gifts for moms with varying interests and tastes.
Best high-end gifts for moms
UGG Women's Scuffette II Slippers: available at Macy's
You can’t go wrong with a nice pair of slippers for Mom. They’re comfortable, cozy and indulgent. A high-end slipper like this one makes a good gift because while they’re under $, they’re not something most people want to splurge on for themselves. These are nice and warm because of their sheepskin lining and suede upper. Another great thing about these slippers in particular is the rubber sole. If she needs to run outside wearing the slippers, they’re durable enough to withstand it.
This necklace is a thoughtful gift for any dog and cat moms. The process is fairly simple — the purchaser merely has to send a picture of the pet, and the artist will create a rubber stamp in order to imprint the pet portrait onto the pendant. The artist, Erin Harris, can engrave the pet’s name or another meaningful word, phrase or date onto the back of the necklace. The finished necklace also comes with the rubber stamp which can be reused for stationery or other paper goods.
Cuisinart Air Fryer & Convection Toaster Oven: available at Amazon
Air fryers have been all the rage lately, and they make a wonderful gift for any moms who like to cook or are looking to begin a healthier lifestyle. Air frying is a healthier, easier alternative to making your favorite fried dishes. This Cuisinart model comes highly rated on Amazon and makes for a nice gift that’s not too expensive. This air fryer is available in a few color finishes to fit the style of the kitchen it will live in, and the dual toaster oven functionality allows for counter space optimization.
Slip Pure Silk Queen Pillowcase: available at Ulta
A silk pillowcase like this one makes a wonderful gift for moms, because it's one of those luxuries that most don't want to buy for themselves but everyone can enjoy. While the sensation of sleeping on a silk pillowcase is preferable to your average pillowcase for most, the silk has added benefits for skin and hair, like less creasing in the hair and fewer breakouts on the skin. While Slip is a popular brand, silk pillowcases come in many different price ranges and colors.
While something like this is obviously a great gift for moms who enjoy cooking or have a special family recipe, personalized gifts are also a good idea for the mom who seems to have everything. This board comes in cherry or maple wood and comes engraved with the exact handwriting from the original recipe card (or handwritten-style script font if you don’t have a handwritten recipe card).
Tory Burch Walker Satchel: available at Tory Burch
For the chic working mom, a leather tote never misses. The Walker is a classic style that transcends seasons or trends and fits a laptop up to 13 inches. A tote is also a good idea for a new mom or mom-to-be as a stylish alternative to a diaper bag. The Walker comes in a few different leather colors to fit the style of mom you’re gifting and also matches with an accompanying card case from the designer if you want to add a little something extra onto the gift.
KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer: available at Macy's and Amazon
If the mom on the receiving end of this gift loves to cook or bake, a good stand mixer is a kitchen staple she’ll love. This gift is on the pricier end of the spectrum, but a high-quality appliance like this one lasts for years to come and gets utilized quite often by those who enjoy baking. KitchenAid also sells various attachments like a veggie sheet cutter, slicer or pasta maker, so any amateur chef will get a good bit of use out of this appliance.
Lacoste Home Pique Bath Robe: available at Macy's and Amazon
A nice robe makes a wonderful gift for moms, especially those who are new homeowners, new moms or just love lounging around the house. This one from Lacoste is % cotton terry and comes complete with a belt from the same material. If you want to go the extra mile, take the robe to get monogrammed. It really sets the gift apart and gives it that extra personal, thoughtful touch.
This one is for all the new moms out there. This gift set from Uncommon Goods comes complete with spa-like goodies for Mom, like a belly butter and a balm for reducing nursing-induced soreness. This gift box also offers a couple of things for the baby, like Calming Baby Balm and a Lavender Lullaby Wash. These skincare products are natural so there’s no need to second-guess the ingredients.
These pajamas, while pricey, have a cult following, which makes them a great candidate for a gift. The Gisele is a traditional short-sleeve button-down and short set made of buttery-soft jersey fabric with piping along the hems and lapels. A matching pajama set feels like such a luxury, and it's one of those things you can never have too many of. This style comes in a variety of colors, and the brand also makes a wide range of styles like joggers for the more sporty moms or a teddy style for a mom who prefers a feminine look.

CNB investigating how officers arrested, questioned year-old drug suspect who later died by suicide
SINGAPORE: The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a year-old suspect who later died after falling from a height after he was charged with drug trafficking offences.
Investigations are expected to be completed before the end of October, CNB said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Oct 13), adding that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) intends to make the findings public.
"Upon completion of the investigations, MHA will also take further steps as necessary," CNB said.
The agency's comments came after Instagram user Cecilia Ow posted about how her son Justin had died after falling from height on Sep 16, months after being arrested on Feb 3 for a drug-related offence.
The Instagram post on Tuesday contained a screenshot of a letter she had sent to Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Oct 1, in which she described how Justin was allegedly mistreated during the investigation process.
In the letter, she also mentioned how she had lost her son to suicide. The police are investigating Justin's death, CNB said in its Facebook post.
"I believe that the CNB officers and the prosecutorial system drove Justin to his death," she wrote. "The mental, psychological and emotional trauma inflicted on him was brutal, unnecessary and insensitive."
On Wednesday, CNB acknowledged that "statements have been made publicly" about how Justin was arrested and questioned, and that the allegations are being fully investigated.
Mr Shanmugam had contacted Justin's mother personally on Oct 1 to assure her that a thorough review of the matter would be conducted, said CNB.
"Justin's mother was also provided with the contact details for Minister Shanmugam and Minister of State for Ministry of Home Affairs, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim. She was told that she could contact the ministers directly, at any time, on this matter," it added.
"CNB has also arranged for psychological support to be provided to her during this difficult period."
ALLEGATIONS OF WHAT HAPPENED
In her letter, Ms Ow claimed that "six to nine" CNB officers had chased Justin down before arresting him on Feb 3, adding that they raided his room but found nothing.
Justin was interrogated in an "abrasive" manner, held in custody in "less than ideal" conditions and was not allowed to contact his family, she alleged.
According to CNB, Justin was suspected of trafficking a Class A controlled drug online.
He was arrested at Serangoon North Ave 4 and officers had recovered drugs from another location in the area, said CNB. "The evidence indicated that the drugs belonged to Justin and that they were meant for sale," the agency said.
CNB added that Justin was released on bail the next day on Feb 4.
The Attorney-General’s Chambers then decided in June that Justin be charged with drug trafficking offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act, CNB said.
According to Ms Ow, on Jun 23 at pm, Justin reported to the CNB headquarters "without prior knowledge" that he was going to be charged.
She claimed that Justin was held in a frigid cell, prohibited from doing push-ups to warm himself up and was only allowed to be bailed out at 8pm.
CNB said Justin was released on the same day after he was served with the charges.
"Normally, persons charged with drug-related offences will not be released on bail, until produced in court. Nevertheless, CNB made an exception and released Justin after he was served with the charges on Jun 23, because he was 17 years old," the agency added.
Justin was then charged in court on Jun 24 and released on court bail.
Ms Ow said Justin "became a different person" after his encounter with CNB officers, hiding in his room all day and only appearing for meals or to use the toilet. He stopped talking to family members, could not focus on his studies and had frequent nightmares after his "brutal arrest", she said.
"His psychologist told me that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder," she wrote, adding that Justin had seen a psychologist at the Institute of Mental Health from February right up to his death.
CNB said it is aware of Justin's death after falling from height, adding that the police are also investigating the matter.
"CNB understands Justin’s mother’s grief and will continue to render assistance to her," it said.
On Thursday, Mr Shanmugam addressed the incident in a Facebook post, saying it was a "very sad heartbreaking situation".
